In case you may have missed it, there’s a ton of basketball on the air this weekend, leading up to that thing they call “The Big Dance,” which starts next Thursday — can you feel the synergy? A number of conference tournament games have already concluded this afternoon and the winners probably won’t surprise you:
Georgetown defeats Villanova, 82-63 (Big East)
Xavier dispatches Dayton, 74-65 (Atlantic 10)
Florida State beat Wake Forest, 70-60 (ACC)
Oklahoma upends Texas Tech, 76-72 (Big 12… I guess having Bob Knight in the studio didn’t work to well for son Pat)
South Carolina mercifully ends LSU’s season, 77-73 (SEC)
Cal squeaks by Washington, 84-81 (Pac-10)
Arizona rolls Oregon State, 87-56 (Pac-10)
Update – 3:30 pm CST, More Final Scores:
Boise State sends Hawaii home, 80-74 (WAC)
Miami drops NC State, 63-50 (ACC)
And much to Will Leitch’s delight, Illinois outlasts Penn State, 63-62.
Meanwhile, BYU is beating the hell out of Colorado State 77-51 with about six minutes left in the second. Bob Huggins and his Mountaineer crew are up by 10 on UConn with about 4 minutes remaining.
In the SEC, Vanderbilt’s Shan Foster is apparently taking the Auburn match-up personally. Vandy is up 53-44 (15 plus minutes in the second) and Foster already has 22 points and six 3-pointers. USC and Arizona State are tied, 49-49 in the second as well.
Update – 4:30 pm CST, More Final Scores:
Vandy finishes off Auburn, 93-82 (SEC) – Foster finished with 26 points, while A.J. Ogilvy finished with 27.
BYU dusts Colorado State, 89-62
West Virginia upsets (intentionally) UConn, 78-72
USC beats Arizona State, 59-55
Colorado is up 83-81 over Baylor in overtime at the Big 12 tourney.
After a second overtime, Colorado beat Baylor, 91-84, making it the first time in Big 12 conference tournament history a 12-seed beat a 5-seed.
