OK folks, we are on the last stanza of games for the first day. We finally had some lower seeds winning although, we got just missed seeing Duke go down. The night games are as follows: Wisconsin/Cal St. Fullerton, West Virgina/Arizona, Notre Dame/George Mason (featuring Luke Harangody, our lead image for tonight) and UCLA/Mississippi Valley State.
I wonder if Jerry Rice will be there.
8:53 - Annnnnd KC is showing Wisconsin/CSF… I guess the K-State fans want to scout as well. I’ll probably be watching Arizona/WVU.
9:02 - No Cinderella story for George Mason this year. Notre Dame is head and shoulders above them and look like a real threat to North Carolina… provided they get by Washington State, who smoked Winthrop by 31, the largest margin of victory so far today.
Mike Brey has already gone to his bench, choosing to rest Harangody.
9:05 - Cal State Fullerton looks like they are as quick as water bugs out there and that could pose a problem for the more deliberate Badgers the entire game. Are we up for another Duke/Belmont? WVU/Arizona is kind of slow going.
9:20 - Is a nag screen from CBS, one that asks if you are enjoying the broadcast, necessary? I mean, I love the fact they offer MMOD, but damn, a nag screen?
Really?
All of these opening games are still in the “feeling out” process. Although, UCLA is starting to put some distance between them and MVS. As for Cal St. Fullerton, well, they are still hanging around.
One more thing, it’s weird to hear announcers talk about white players with “hops,” something I got in the WVU/Arizona game when they were discussing Chase Budinger and Joe Alexander.
9:40 - Everybody’s at or going to halftime. What I’ve seen: WVU and Arizona looks like it will come down to the last minute. It’s like watching a team play its reflection. Two very similar teams… UCLA is putting it on Jerry Rice’s school, but then again, is that a surprise?
CSF is proving to be a problem for Wisconsin for the first half. I mentioned their quickness and I don’t think that’s going away.
I’m tired of Coke Zero commercials.
9:55 - All Irish, all the time. Perhaps someone can tell me why the football program and Charlie Weiss get more attention than Mike Brey?
10:00 - 2:22 into the second half and CSF is still quicker than Wisconsin. It didn’t go away.
10:15 - His name is Alex Ruoff and he plays for West Fu**in’ Virgina. I’ve heard his name a lot tonight and rightfully so. He’s got 16 big points and judging by this, I’m pretty sure all the campus ladies love him.
10:20 - Another nag screen. What gives? I’d rather they use a freaking pop-up.
10:25 - Harangody with a double-double; 15 and 13. I still say he doesn’t play as hard as Tyler Hansbrough.
10:32 - Wisconsin’s superior size and stern defense has caught up to Cal State Fullerton. So much, KC switched to WVU/Arizona. NO MORE SCOUTING, WILDCAT FANS!!!
10:43 - In case you aren’t paying attention, UCLA is up and up big. I’m haven’t seen much of that game but they are going for the highest margin of victory of the night award, which is currently held by Washington State.
For some reason, I switched WVU with Arizona in my bracket… Was that a mistake? If the Mountaineers keep dropping 3s like this, probably so.

10:52 - Thank goodness this is a closer game. The others aren’t. Again. They are talking about Lute Olsen. Did he feel threatened by Kevin O’Neill?
10:55 - West Virgina wins and they’ll beat Duke…
OK, this is it for me. It was a great day for college basketball and UK aside, I wasn’t disappointed. See you tomorrow. Same time, same channel.
Whew. Long day. ![]()
