Intentional Upset: That Didn’t Last Long

The University of Tennessee garnered its first ever number one ranking Monday afternoon after beating Memphis last Saturday. But how long would the Vols hold on to this newly acquired top spot? Thanks to the Vanderbilt Commodores, not very long at all.
Bruce Pearl’s Volunteers found out being number one puts a much bigger target on your back, a target Vandy was more than happy to take a shot at. Powered by Shan Foster’s 32 points, the Commodores knocked off another number one team by the score of 72-69. The game was a highly contested matter with 53 fouls being called. There were also three technical fouls issued.
However, besides the roughhousing, the game featured two of the premiere guards in America, Foster and Chris Lofton, trading baskets with each other. Lofton finished with 25 points while hitting six shots behind the 3-point line.
For Tennessee, they found being the number one team isn’t an easy hat to wear as the Vandy crowd was incredibly boisterous, making Vandy’s gym that much harder to play in. After the game, Vandy coaches and players celebrated with the students, a group that was prevented from storming the floor due to fines from the SEC from previous victories.
In other upset news, Missouri State beat 20th-ranked Drake by the score of 86-83.
