Michael BeasleyIt’s been apparent for some time that Kansas State’s Michael Beasley was going to be a special college basketball player, however, I don’t think he was supposed to be this good, this quickly. In the past two games for Kansas State, both losses, Beasley scored a total of 75 points and 28 rebounds. In fact, it’s K-State’s third straight loss and their fourth out of five games.

Not exactly a recipe for college basketball success. It’s also a great way to waste performances from one of the best freshman ever to lace up a pair of sneakers. Last night, this losing trend continued when Beasley’s team lost to Texas, giving the Wildcats their first home loss of their Big 12 campaign.

The fourth-ranked Longhorns were led by the explosive D.J. Augustin’s 24 points, as Texas seemed content to use the “let Beasley go off and stop the rest of his teammates” approach. What hurt Kansas State the most however was Bill Walker, who scored 1 big point, despite missing all of his fourteen attempts from the field.

For K-State, they now stand at 18-9 (8-5) and are running the risk of missing the NCAA Tournament… provided they don’t consistently support the best freshman in college basketball. As for Texas, they find themselves at 24-4 (11-2 in Big 12 play) and have their sites set on a number one seed in the upcoming Big Dance… of course, before that happens, the Longhorns will probably have to win the Big 12 tournament.

As long as Augustin is playing this way, that’s certainly a distinct possibility. For K-State, it appears as if they are entering the “appreciate Michael Beasley while you can” phase of their season. Although, I’m sure Wildcats fans want some wins to go beside Beasley’s gaudy stat lines.

Ballhype: hype it up! Stumble it!

Yeah it’s a shame Beasley doesn’t play for a major college program such as Kentucky ;) Can you imagine that kid alongside Joe C, Ramel, Stevenson, and P Pat?! OMG! We certainly wouldn’t be talking about whether UK will make the tourney or not. More like “A 1 or 2 seed?” Hmmmm.

Beasley looks like a one and done player. Just think about it, there will never again be a big-time college rivalry between the best players at the NCAA level for more than one year. Good for the players who get to start the clock ticking on that first NBA contract, not great for college fans.

[...] course, in radio interviews, Michael Beasley said he enjoyed being in Manhattan, Kansas and that he would consider returning next year… [...]
