Who’s Number 1? Pitt, That’s Who!

Quick, who is the leading scorer for the number one team in college basketball? If you said Tyler Hansbrough for North Carolina, you’d be wrong on both fronts. First, the Tar Heels are no longer the number one team in the country, and second, Hansbrough does not play for the Pitt Panthers. If you answered Sam Young of the Pittsburgh Panthers, you’d be correct because not only does Young play for the Panthers, Pitt is also the top-ranked team in the country, thanks to Carolina’s loss to Boston College yesterday.
It’s the first time in school history the Panthers have ascended to the top of the college basketball world and while they are a good-to-great team, I wouldn’t expect this top ranking to last. Pitt plays in the Big East conference — considered one of the best college basketball conferences in D1 — and will probably lose a game or two along the way. I mean, I hope none of their fans are taking the “Undefeated Big East record or Bust” position because it’s incredibly doubtful the Big East regular season champion will make through conference play undefeated.
In claiming the top spot, Pitt secured 30 of the 31 first place votes. Enjoy your stay, Panther fans, because after the two upcoming home games, the Panthers have games at Louisville, versus Syracuse, at West Virginia followed by another away game against Villanova. I think it’s fairly safe to say we’ll know much more about the Panthers by the time January is over.

My buddy and Chris’ old roommate (we’ll just call him guru) said UNC would walk through the season undefeated with NO PROBLEM. I told him there was no way they could go through the ACC schedule undefeated, let alone the whole damn season. 1 ACC game, 1 loss. Guru. That term has officially been bastardized.

Or the definition changed to mean “knows absolutely nothing about” the topic being discussed.
