The SEC is losing two of it’s bigger, non-Tim Tebow football stars to the NFL: Knowshon Moreno and Matthew Stafford have declared their intentions to enter the 2009 NFL Draft instead of coming back to Athens for the 2009 season. The news didn’t exactly comes as a surprise considering each player is expected to be taken in the first round.
To most draft services, Stafford will be one of the top-rated quarterbacks going in, although there have been some rumblings — mainly from various blog commentators — about Stafford not showing them very much besides having a strong arm. The same is true for Moreno as well: Many draft services have him ranked as one of the best running backs available in the upcoming draft but a lot non-UGA college football fans don’t share the excitement.
I’m guessing that’s why a lot of us are fans and not team executives.
As for UGA’s offensive losses, Stafford and Moreno join receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, who is graduating. This means Mark Richt has to pretty much rebuild his offense in the offseason, although, with A.J. Green still on campus for two more seasons and another great recruiting class coming in, it’s doubtful the “rebuilding process” will extend much past Bulldogs’ spring practice.
