Gators Trash Talk

The BCS Championship Game is on Thursday, and now that most of the minor bowl games are out of the way, the national focus is turning to all Oklahoma Sooners/Florida Gators, all of the time, especially when it comes to trash talking. Is there an easier way to get the media’s attention than when players say something “negative” about an opposing team?

It started when Oklahoma sophomore cornerback Dominique Franks decided he’d voice his opinion about the phenomenon known only as “Tim Tebow.” Let’s just say Franks was less-than-impressed:

“If you look at the three best quarterbacks in the country, they came from the Big 12. The three best receivers in the country came from the Big 12. The three best tight ends came from the Big 12. So we’ve faced some great offenses, and a lot of people don’t understand that other conferences don’t have what we face.”

While Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops tried to downplay his player’s quote, saying the media asked leading questions of his young players, the object of Franks’ affection, Tebow, laughed the cornerback off, saying he took the statements as a compliment. Tebow was also complimentary of the Oklahoma secondary — essentially taking the “fight fire with kindness” approach.

Not all of the Gators followed Tebow’s lead, however. As indicated by EDSBS, Gator cornerback Joe Haden let his haircut do the talking for him while linebacker Brandon Spikes was a little more forthcoming with his opinion of the Sooners:

“They are a step slower. It will be different for them when they see the speed of our defense.”

And with these gems, I think it’s safe to say the Countdown to the BCS Championship Game has officially started.

Don’t know if you noticed but I detected a hint of sarcasm in Tebow’s retort. I didnt see Frank’s comments as a dis on Florida or the SEC but rather a motivational spark and a challenge to his own team. I can definitely understand why so many Big 12 teams are sick of hearing about the SEC. They have had some great teams in the last few years. This year was no exception. But, until they play against an SEC defense and see that speed first hand, they cant truly appreciate it. I actually expect this to be a great game and I’ll take the Gators 45-30. Then again, I work at a golf course, so, what the hell do I know? S-E-C!!
