Mardy Gilyard Has Some Parting Words

The news of Brian Kelly’s acceptance of the Notre Dame job has caused quite a few ripples in the college football world, especially with the team he’s leaving behind. To say Kelly’s former Cincinnati Bearcats players were disappointed with the news would be akin to saying Monica Bellucci is “pretty.” While it’s factually correct, it doesn’t quite capture the magnitude of the situation. Thankfully, YouTube is all up in this piece, filling in whatever blanks these words do not, courtesy of fantastic receiver, Mardy Gilyard.

Gilyard was not shy about sharing his feelings for Kelly’s departure with a number of publications, like ESPN and the Cincinnati Enquirer. Essentially, anyone that asked Collins got a taste of his obvious displeasure:

“I didn’t want to hear it,” he said. “I’m fairly disgusted with the situation — him letting it last this long. … Everybody and their mamma knew what was going on. I feel like he did our team an injustice. Hopefully he’ll pack his things up and get to South Bend in a hurry.”

Gilyard wasn’t the only Bearcat to share his disappointment with the media. Senior Alex Daniels was also unhappy with the way his former coach left town:

“We want to make sure (people) still come out and support us,” Daniels said. “Because we were the ones out there playing every play, every snap. He was just the one calling the plays.”

It should be noted, both players walked out of the meeting when Kelly revealed his decision to take the Irish job. Like I was saying, “disappointment” doesn’t seem to capture the mood of Kelly’s former players. Good thing ESPN has some more video to hammer the point home:

While the barometer towards Kelly’s taking of the Notre Dame job seems to be positive — that is, he’ll probably succeed in South Bend — his former players have another message: “Now that you’ve turned your back on us, don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.”

Have you got a thing for Monica Bellucci? ;) Can’t blame the players for the way they feel about Kelly’s departure. I’d be pretty pissed too. These schools that want to go after big name coaches (and I use that term lightly in Kelly’s case, no offense) should not be allowed to talk to said coaches until their SEASON IS OVER (bowl games included), IMHO. The NCAA needs to do something about that because, honestly, I can’t blame Kelly for leaving UC to go and fill one of the premier coaching vacancies in college football. And that’s no knock on UC but, c’mon now. I honestly think this will help UC because now they’ve got a HUGE chip on their shoulders. This should be a pretty exciting game now. Before all of this, I just couldn’t see the Bearcats hanging with the big dogs of the SEC. Throw a little betrayal into the mix and now we could have ourselves a battle. I still don’t see how UC’s offense can do well against one of the fastest defenses in football but, who knows. And honestly, I think Notre Dame could’ve gotten a bigger name coach (again, no offense to Kelly) to revive their program. Kind of reminds me of UK snatching up Billy Gillispie just to cover the wound of not getting Billy Donovan. But we see how that worked out ;) John Wall is a god btw!

I admire Gilyard’s passion. It’s hard not to. I hope this motivates them to beat God Bless Tim.

And yes, I do have a thing for Monica. How can you not?
