ALCS – Are The Red Sox In Trouble?

While they are only facing a 2-1 deficit, thanks to some inferior hitting, the Boston Red Sox look a little lost against the upstart Tampa Bay Rays. Apparently, the Sox fans feel the same way.
9-1 ALCS losses at Fenway have a way of silencing even the most hearty of crowds.
Whatever the case, the Rays look like they want to take control of this series thanks to the hitting of B.J. Upton and Evan Longoria, to name a few. Rays pitcher Matt Garza deserves a ton of credit for last night’s win as well, considering he helped hold the Sox to a one run over six innings. Garza’s win was secured by some stout relief pitching that only gave up one hit in three innings.
Speaking of hitting, if the Red Sox want to get back in this series, the bats of Jacoby Ellsbury and David Ortiz need to wake up in a hurry. Neither player has a hit since the ALCS began. For MassLive, Oritz’ struggles have been quite troubling:
David Ortiz has looked largely lost in this postseason, and particularly so against the Rays. Sure, he has walked four times in three games, but it seems like he’s always pressing, waiting for the next pop-up. This one requires faith, because Big Papi has earned a level respect that few receive.
Even worse than the hitting woes is the fact that the win came off of Jon Lester, who, up until last night, was looking like the Red Sox ace this post season, thanks to some injury issues facing Josh Beckett. So much for that. Now the Red Sox are putting their faith in knuckleballer Tim Wakefield who will be facing Andy Sonnanstine as Boston tries to even the series.
