Gossage Hammers Clemens

We’ve been pretty mum on the whole Roger Clemens thing since the initial Mitchell Report broke… I prefer to leave all of that to the experts. However, this one’s too good to pass up. Coming of his Hall of Fame induction, Goose Gossage has some choice words for Roger Clemens and other players that have been linked to steroids: You pretty much suck.

A report in the Daily News has details of Gossage’s opinions when it comes to the baseball subject that will not die:

Gossage said it “remains to be seen” if Clemens used steroids, but points out that the Rocket’s workout buddy, Andy Pettitte, “came clean.”

And

“I know what workout regiments do,” said Gossage, who received 85.8% of the Baseball Writers Association vote after nine years on the ballot. “My career was declining the older I got… If they find they did do performance-enhancing drugs … then I think it needs to be dealt with. There’s too much at stake with the great players and the history of the game… I can’t say this is a level playing field.”

Gossage mentions age again:

“Now we’ve got to figure out who is telling the truth,” Gossage said, coupling steroid era slugger Barry Bonds with Clemens. “It’s kind of weird that (they had) some of their most productive years … as they got older.”

Judging by the way the Hall voters have thrown Mark McGwire aside, if the doubts about Clemens continue to hover, he may get his wish when it comes to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Goose totally deserved to get in years ago, and he’s dead on about Clemens and Bonds. Much as us old guys would like to believe that hitting the gym means throwing 95 at 45, it’s just not the case unless your name is Nolan “Perfect Pitching Mechanics” Ryan.
