If you want to say ugly words around Pohlad, try ’salary floor’ instead. As a Mets fan, seeing Santana take the mound for the Mets will help get past last year’s epic collapse. Sorry Twinkies, the old boy Pohlad has to shuffle off to the bargain bin in the sky at some point.

Who knows, you might end up with a thoughtful Dan Snyder or Peter Angelos type someday.

Meanwhile, I’m going to cheerfully count the days to pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training.

Admittedly, the Twin Cities isn’t quite as small as like Cincinnati but they still play by the smaller market rules, which can be laid at the feet of the Twins ownership, but, let’s not kid ourselves.

Minnesota is no New York when it comes to market size, obviously. However, do they even have the kind of money it would take to sign Johan AND build a playoff-worthy team around him?

Two ugly words: salary cap.

Polhad has the highest net worth of any owner in the game. He just signed Cuddyer and Morneau long term to go along with Joe Mauer. He offered 20 mil per year for 4 years. Santana wanted 6.

Enough crying about the Twins being a small market team. They just act like one and use that as an excuse for a stingy owner…

Ironically, Fred Wilpon has been mocked as “Fred Coupon” for years for presumably being cheap (although Carlos Beltran, Billy Wagner and Pedro Martinez would beg to differ!). Wilpon’s opening of the pockebook moves him far away from the “coupon” tag. Also, he really does no longer look like a small-market team playing in the shadow of the Yankees.
