Something happened to the Kansas City Royals on their way to getting their record to the .500 mark — they ran into Boston’s Jon Lester and he decided to no-hit them. So after 9 innings, 130 pitches, 9 strikeouts and 2 base-on-balls, the Red Sox have another no-hitter — the 18th — to add to their history books.
While Lester was indeed masterful, great defensive plays by Jacoby Ellsbury and Julio Lugo, among others, helped secure his no-hit bid.
The pitching performance also help further Lester’s ever-growing legend. Besides the fact he’s a successful cancer survivor, Lester also started for the Red Sox when they clinched last year’s World Series Championship against Colorado.
As for the Royals, their climb back to respectability continues. Is an over .500 record out of the question for team that’s struggled to be competitive for a few seasons now? As long as they don’t have to face Jon Lester each night, they should be just fine.
