Fist Kisses Are Apparently Homophobic

Wouldn’t you know it? The one time the NBA uses IntentionalFoul.com to promote one of their viral videos showing what goes on behind the scenes of ESPN’s NBA RV, the video winds up getting dropped because of “questionable content.” Apparently, Shaq’s reaction to Breen’s “fist kiss” request — “No fist kiss, no fist love, no fist hump. None of that. You’re a weirdo man. Stay over there. Fist kiss. Disgusting.” — is considering offensive to those who protect the interests of America’s gay population.
Upon reading Shaq’s line, you can see why folks who are sensitive to that sort of thing might be concerned. But is it wrong for a person, in this case Shaq, to not be interested in anything that suggests man-on-man relations?

I call shenanigans on the homophobia angle. Nothing in the video suggests Shaq is being homophobic. The only questionable word in his little monologue is “disgusting”, and even that’s fine by me. I mean, really: How many gay people consider straight sex to be “disgusting”? Most of them. Yet nobody bats an eye at that, so why are straight people vilified for essentially the same, though inverted, opinion?

I honestly think some folks go out of their way to be offended. It would be nice to see someone stand their ground and say, “We apologize if this offended you, but that was in no way our intention. We are not, however, excluding ‘Fist Kiss’ from our viral rotation. We stand behind our content and will answer any questions concerning insensitivity.”
But nooooooooooooooooooooooo. ESPN simply capitulates. How very novel.
