Great Mustaches of the NBA

Kurt Rambis

As proud representatives of the Movember movement, I thought highlighting some great NBA mustaches would go a little way in helping with some additional recognition for Movember’s cause. With that in mind, I’ve selected some memorable staches, some from the vintage days and some from the 80s. Kurt Rambis is our lead image, and after looking at that lip, it’s easy to see why.

Unfortunately, Adam Morrison didn’t make the cut, but it’s not for a lack of effort.

Because of trends, most in this collection are considered old school players, meaning the mighty mustache needs to make a comeback in the NBA. It’s a moral imperative. Anyway, here are a number of players sporting awesome lip hair that stood out to me. If I missed anyone, please let me know.

Hakeem Olajuwon

Besides an incredible bevvy of post moves, Hakeem the Dream had a dreamshake of a stache as well.

John Lucas

John Lucas knows the value of awesome lip hair. That thing is so commanding, it probably intimidated other non-hairy lipped opponents.

Dr. J

With a stache that strong, it’s no wonder he’s a Doctor.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Kareem rocked the stache, as did some of the fans who followed him, hence the reason for this image.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and A.C. Green

Kareem’s influence also rubbed off on A.C. Green.

James Edwards

The man with the Fu-Manchu, better known as James Edwards. “Buddha’s” stache is an awesome testament to the brilliance well-groomed facial hair can provide.

Clyde Drexler

While his game went mainly to the right, Clyde the Glide’s stache covered both sides.

Charles Barkley

While his was a little on the “peachfuzz” side, Barkley has represented the mighty mustache for some time now.

Joe Dumars

Detroit’s silent assassin might have been a quiet player, but Joe Dumars’ mustache spoke volumes about his strength.

Karl Malone

No mailing it in from Karl Malone’s incredible mustache.

Patrick Ewing

People say Patrick Ewing’s size was intimidating. I think we know the real truth.

Larry Bird

Shh. Larry Legend’s blond lip hair has something to share.

Artis Gilmore

Artis Gilmore has had some fantastic facial hair throughout the ages. No way was he missing this list.

Walt Frazier

Pure, unadulterated class. That’s about the only thing that comes to mind when I see images of Walt “Clyde” Frazier and his incredible facial hair. Is it any wonder Just For Men uses him as a spokesperson?

Connie Hawkins

The next lip hair designation goes to the wonderful Connie Hawkins. Besides being a great throwback player, he also sported some dangerous lip hair. Mustaches that sharp should be illegal in all 50 states.

Phil Jackson

There’s no way a Zen Master would escape our collection. His powerful mustache hides memories of Jackson and Bill Walton, sitting in the desert and doing peyote. I imagine 1970s New York City couldn’t get enough of Phil and his incredible lip hair.

And with that, you have our celebration of some of the incredible mustaches to appear in the NBA. From old school to Adam Morrison, the mustache has helped from the way we celebrate the game — or at least it should. Like I said, there are probably a few hundred players I missed (like Kelly Tripucka), but I think this post goes a long way in capturing the greatness of the NBA mustache.
