Jason KiddReports from ESPN.com indicate an agreement has been reached that will send Mr. Triple-double to the Mavericks for just about every bench player Mark Cuban can part with. The principles are these:

Dallas is agreeing to send Devin Harris, Jerry Stackhouse, DeSagana Diop, Devean George, and Maurice Ager to the Nets In return, the Mavs will get Kidd and Malik Allen. New Jersey could also be receiving:

the league-maximum $3 million in cash and send its first-round draft pick this June as well as a first-rounder in 2010.

While some are already decrying the move (which hasn’t been finalized or approved), saying the Mavs sacrificed their future for JKidd, a statement that pretty silly. Two low-end first-round draft picks are not the necessarily the cornerstone of any NBA future, unless they have a Nick Van Exel/Michael Finley-type of coming out.

Second of all, it’s gives the Mavericks perhaps the best playmaker in the NBA and it’s not like he’s only good for the rest of this season, a point Kidd’s 07/08 stats strongly support: 11 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds. Plus he brings a toughness to the Mavs they apparently lacked the last two seasons by losing in the Finals to the Heat and then the Golden State Warriors in the first round last season.

Kidd IMMEDIATELY makes everyone on the team, including Dirk Nowitzki, better. Josh Howard and Jason Terry should also flourish with a lead ball-handler as effective as he is. If he can mesh with his teammates before the playoffs come back around, the Mavericks will be a team no one wants to play.

For Kidd, a trade to Dallas represents a return to the place his professional career started in 1994. This version of the Mavericks is a considerably different team than when Kidd was teamed with Jamal Mashburn and Jim Jackson during his initial stint in Dallas.
