Kenny Smith Blasts Cuban on Twitter

Kenny Smith

I feel something like a Twitter stalker, but considering the context of the story and the way it has grown, this post seems fitting. As you well know, Mark Cuban issued his apology to Kenyon Martin and his mother for the trash-talk he directed at Martin’s mother. While the motivation for the apology may very well stem from Martin’s words after last night’s game, Cuban did try to correct his mistake. Unfortunately, not everyone who covers NBA Basketball agreed with the method Cuban used to apologize. You see, Cuban apologized with his normal mode of communication: through Blog Maverick.

Apparently, that was a little too impersonal for Kenny “The Jet” Smith, who voiced his displeasure with Cuban’s attempt on his Twitter page.

As you can see from Smith’s latest tweet, Cuban wasn’t too pleased with Jet’s response and now they are going to discuss the situation. I’m not sure, however, if this discussion will take place on TNT or out of the public eye. Whatever the case, Smith indicates he will let his followers (guilty) know what happens when everything is said and done.

Another idea to consider: Is this what David Stern and the rest of the NBA front office envisioned as a large number of the NBA’s analysts and players migrate to ever-growing-in-popularity mircoblogging tool? Does an issue like this being discussed in the public’s eye show the NBA in a way the image-conscience Stern would like? Considering past rulings, public opinion doesn’t really matter to Stern — especially if it goes against what he thinks is good for the game. If he feels this type of publicity reflects negatively on the NBA, don’t be surprised if some Twitter guidelines aren’t laid down.

Hell, he already showed us how to monetize the service. Why would dictating how his company is portrayed be any different?

Mark Cuban is most definitly one of those owners who has never played a lick of ball. Probably only with the guys at shot around. Because the only person that can talk to another ball players mother about her son is probably another ball player and he better be on the time. Mr Cuban did apologize, but to do it on a blog, the damage was not done on a blog it was done face to face what a coward. But like I said he is a owner nothing is ever face to face anymore. Something as personal as that at least deserves so face time. Be a man Cuban you said the comment to her face apologize to her face and I bet Kmart would let it go. Stop shooting jumpers and post up be a man.

I truly feel that Kenny is spot on concerning Mr. Cuban’s weak apology. He is the owner of the Dallas Mavericks and should be held at a much higher standard than an average fan. First of all he should have never approached or said anything to Kmart’s mother or Melos’s wife. That was very unprofessional. Then he should have made a personal apology when he saw them. Matter of fact he should have went a step above that and done something special like put them in a box or buy them drinks…you get the idea. Finally I am disappointed in the NBA and the way they are just brushing this under the rug. If this was Ron Arrest, Steven Jackson, Marbury, or Melo that spoke to a fan in that manner this would be a ongoing saga for months, and the NBA would have fined severely.

Mark Cuban needs to be fined and I think his comment were childish.

  4. Charles Says:

Since Mark Cuban’s has closed off comments on his blog about the unwarranted out burst at Keyon Martin’s mother, I have only 3 works to describe what Cuban did: He’s a Coward!

  5. Chris Says:

Apparently, Cuban isn’t going to be in Denver tonight…

  6. Mark Says:

yeah because the mavs will loose and i wouldn’t wanna be there either

i believe that america need to grow up.people think after they finished damaging the reputation of someone, that can easily go away.it is really the mentality of the american people.they say anything they want to hurt you.And then,I am sorry. They inflicted the wound ,and they thought that they could close it up easily.People tend to forgive not to forget.A damage done is a damage.it can not be reversible.it is just like the case for Mark Cuban.

    Kenny,

About the Refs. Every game should be reviewed to count up each reps missed calls. Whenever a ref misses seven (7) calls, they should be suspended for the next game. If they have two (2) flagrant misses they should be suspended for the next game even if they don’t have seven total. If they have seven total and two of those were flagrants they should be suspended for the next two (2) games.
Flagrant Definition: Obvious (not close) miss that: (1) put a player on the bench prematurely, (2) fouls a player out of the game (3) gives a player his 5th foul and (4) gives the apponent the opportunity to win.

Let me know what you think.

  10. Michael Curry Says:

    Kenny,

Forgot a couple of things. A flagrant by the ref also equals giving a player his 5th, 6th or 7th technical on a bad call.

Technical fouls on bad calls should be recinded and if a ref gets suspended, all of his technical fouls for that series should be recinded.

  11. Chris Says:

Michael, you might want to go to Kenny’s Twitter and tell him, because unfortunately, he didn’t write this post. I do, however, believe your ideas about reviewing referees are already implemented by the NBA — although, I’m not sure about the scoring system.
