The NBA Loves Enforcing Traveling Rules

As pointed by True Hoop, this nifty little video demonstrates just how poor a job the NBA does when it comes to enforcing the traveling violation. What we have is, within the span of about 5-10 seconds of game time, Corey Maggette traveling six times. In one possession. Maggette doesn’t stop there, however. After making a mockery of the correct way to move around the court when you have possession of the ball, Maggette then clotheslines Maurice Evans after getting stripped.
To recap: Maggette walks all over basketball’s traveling rules with no call whatsoever from the officials, but yet, he manages to turn the ball over anyway. And then he tries to take the head off of the player he gave the ball away to. In my mind, this might be one of the best individual possessions of basketball I’ve ever witnessed (because we all are).
Considering just how badly the referee crew did interpreting the traveling rules, I’m surprised they called the foul when Maggette grabbed Evans around the head. I’m almost amazed they didn’t consider that incidental contact — or blame Evans for getting his head in the way of Maggette’s forearm.
