Obama and Basketball

“Sports have always been a central part of my life. Growing up, I learned about competition and teamwork on the basketball court, and these days I try to get in a pickup game whenever I can. If I’m fortunate enough to move into the White House, I’d consider putting in a basketball court.”
- President-elect Barack Obama to SI.com
I saw Dan Shanoff use the word “Obamaball” today and after reading his post and SI’s interviews with the then-nominees containing the above quote, it’s pretty obvious where the sport of basketball ranks with our new President-elect.
While Obama is a well-known Chicago White Sox fan, and seems to be a Bulls follower as well. However, he’s made no real choice of college affiliation. He doesn’t pump the Rainbow Warriors of Hawaii and I doubt Harvard is high enough on the pecking order when it comes to big time college athletics. Because of his public service for the state of Illinois, Obama probably supports the Fighting Illini when it comes to college hoops, but again, there doesn’t seem to be any confirmation.
Hell, maybe he’s still an Occidential fan.
Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo posted on Yardbarker last night after he found out the election results, indicating he’d like the Celtics to repeat so he can meet the new President. In Obama’s case, he’d probably challenge Rondo and whoever else wanted some to a game of one-on-one. Considering his scoring prowess at Occidential, he might even hold his own as well.
In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if every upcoming Championship basketball team visiting the White House under Obama’s term gets the same challenge. I’d still like to know what college basketball team he roots for, however.
Such knowledge would make the 2012 vote a much easier decision.

See.. this is great — having a President who, not only is capable of playing basketball, but can and does and enjoys it… compared to the other choice who can barely walk.. much less play sports…
Geez — who can REALLY better relate to “The People” ???
Yay — Obama!!!

The mental image of John McCain trying to play basketball against Rajon Rondo is awfully humorous. Thank you for that.
