Roger Mason Ends a Great NBA Game

As San Antonio and Los Angeles threw down last night, they provided us basketball watchers with a great regular season NBA game, something that doesn’t exist, provided you ask the wrong people. It was a back and forth affair with both teams getting sterling performances from their stars–Kobe went for 29, 7 and 10 while Duncan and Parker had 20. Ginobili chipped in with 27 huge points and this nifty long bomb as the third quarter expired.

But it was Roger Mason’s finishing touches that allowed the Spurs to overcome Kobe’s huge game. After driving by Derek Fisher, Mason elevated and kicked his legs out, which Fisher made contact with, causing Mason to fall to the floor. Meanwhile, his shot was good, as was the free throw attempt, giving the Spurs a one-point lead.

The loss “dropped” the Lakers to 31-7, putting them in a hole they might never recover from. I mean, with such a lousy record, the Lakers are threatening to miss the playoffs entirely. As for the Spurs, the win secured their trip the NBA Finals as they showed the league they are better than the rest of the Western Conference–if they can beat the Lakers, why even have the playoff? Just put them in the Finals against LeBron. Maybe Cleveland won’t get swept again.

Silliness aside, last night’s Spurs/Lakers game did have the makings of a conference championship match up, and if they were to turn out like this one, it would make for one hell of a series. I guess we can only hope. For now, anyway.

And another Spur that knows exactly which spot to run to on the baseline for the kick out from either Duncan, Ginobili or Parker. And just Big Shot Bob and Bruce “Ugh” Bowen did before him. And just like those before him, Mason makes those shots too.

So yeah, I can understand that kind of hate.

    ;)
