Wilt’s Stamp of Approval

Wilt Chamberlain, he of 100 points and thousands of women, may be coming to a postage stamp new you. Thanks to the efforts of some Philadelphia sports writers, writers who strongly support the black community, the US Postal Service will be deciding if the Big Dipper will be approved for a commemorative stamp.

The cause was started by sports writer Donald Hunt of The Philadelphia Tribune, a 123-year-old newspaper that primarily targets the black community. Hunt, who recalled as a child watching in person Chamberlain play for the 76ers against Oscar Robertson and the Cincinnati Royals, believes “The Big Dipper” has the credentials to join Jackie Robinson, Babe Ruth, Joe Louis and Jesse Owens among the sports legends with their own stamps.

“People should remember the great ones,” Hunt wrote for a Feb. 15 story. “They don’t come any bigger or better than Wilt Chamberlain.”

This would be a fitting way to pay respect to the first prototypical athlete of the NBA. See, not only was Chamberlain tall, he was incredibly athletic and coordinated to go along with his height. Remember, he was a high-jump champion while attending Kansas. He also ran the 100-yard dash in under 11 seconds.

Now, imagine, being a 6-6 non-Olympic level athlete trying to guard him because you are the tallest member of your team… Questions about his individual greatness should never be entertained. Until Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Chamberlain held the NBA’s career scoring record with 31419 points. Wilt the Stilt is also the current career rebounding leader with 23924.

Of course, we could also remember him for his role in Conan the Destroyer;)
