Ever since the Brody Croyle/Tyler Thigpen carousel began, I’ve been saying the Chiefs needed to start Damon Huard, the last quarterback to lead the Chiefs to the playoffs. Well, yesterday against the Denver Broncos, apparently Herm Edwards got the message.
And what was the result? Chiefs win, 33-19.
During the last two games, both Chief losses, the local radio media was saying things like, “the team thinks Huard quits” and “they should’ve traded for Matt Cassel a season ago because he’s a better prospect than Brody Croyle” regardless of the fact Cassel hadn’t started a game since high school. Apparently, Kansas City Chiefs football has been so bad, the local AM radio charged with covering it became delusional — I’m looking at you, Kevin Kietzman.
12-game losing streaks can do that, I suppose.
Obviously, Larry Johnson’s 198-yard, two touchdown performance carried the Chiefs to victory, but don’t discount Huard’s play either. 21-28 for 160 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions is nothing to scoff at, especially when you’ve been used to substandard quarterback play.
Now, is Huard the long-term answer to the Chiefs rebuilding plans? Probably not, but he’s a damn good player to have while an up-and-comer learns the NFL ropes; be it Thigpen, Croyle or someone they draft next season. Not only did Huard lead them to victory yesterday, he was also one Dwayne Bowe dropped pass away from having an opportunity to beat the Patriots in Week One.
Until the Chiefs actually get a bona fide quarterback prospect or until Brody Croyle gains about 20 pound of muscle, Huard should remain the Chiefs starter — unless, of course, they don’t like being in a position to win games.
