As we are in the grips of an entertaining NFL season, there are a lot of stories being followed. First and foremost is whether or not the New England Patriots can go undefeated, which is followed closely by the whether or not the Miami Dolphins will finish the season with a perfect record as well: 0-16.

Question: If we call a team with no losses “undefeated,” do we call teams with no wins “defeated?”

Anyway, another topic being discussed this season is who is the best quarterback? Is it Tom Brady or is Peyton Manning the top gunslinger? While there is a consensus these are the top two, where do the rest of the hired arms rank? Well, ESPN has heard your call and decided to do the work for you. In a free ESPN Insider article, the Worldwide Leader uses the services of Scout.com to present the top 64 quarterbacks in the NFL.

Exactly what methodology they used is unknown at this time. Actually, it looks like the folks from Scout did what the rest of us fans do: discussed it amongst themselves until they reached some kind of consensus. Of course, Brady and Manning are the top two, but what about the other 62 quarterbacks? Where do they rank?

Instead of reposting the entire list, I’m going to give you their top ten (along with some of my thoughts) and their bottom three.

1. Tom Brady - Hard to argue but lets not forget the stable of receivers he has around him.

2. Peyton Manning - Has had a great season even with all of the Colts’ injuries. Could easily be first.

3. Brett Favre - Continues to prove the “he should’ve retired a long time ago” crowd completely wrong.

4. Tony Romo - Talk about an envious position… QB for the red-hot Cowboys and single to boot. Certainly living a young man’s dream.

5. Ben Roethlisberger - Big Ben has bounced back well after bouncing off the pavement before last season started.

6. Carson Palmer - Not his greatest season to be sure. Also, isn’t it time he led his team down the field for a game-winning drive?

7. Matt Hasselback - Having a great year on a team that’s largely under-the-radar. Could easily be higher on their list.

8. Drew Brees - Looked great against Falcons. Perhaps the Saints will be better now that they don’t have to worry about getting Reggie Bush the ball every other down.

9. Donovan McNabb - It’s been a hard season for Donovan but he can still wing the ball. I’d still like to see what he could do with a receiving corps like Brady. Will probably be out of Philadelphia next season.

10. David Garrard - Quietly having a very effective season in Jacksonville. Looks like Del Rio knew what he was doing when he picked Garrard over Leftwich.

Now for the bottom three:

62. Patrick Ramsey

63. David Carr

64. Jamie Martin

Not much argument here, especially with Carr… although, I wasn’t even sure Martin and Ramsey were even relevant to this discussion. What do you think with ESPN/Scout’s list? Agree? Disagree? Let us know.

  1. David Utter Says:

McNabb at nine? Did his mom make this list? He’s not even top 20 material. The supporting cast excuse doesn’t fly with Brady having three rings before Randy Moss arrived.

  2. Chris Says:

Did Brady ever have this many touchdowns BEFORE he got this stable of receivers? I’ll go ahead and answer that: NO, he did not.

  3. Xavier Says:

Whoa David Garrard is that low. Romo isn’t in front Farve? Palmer is in front of Hasselback? Jason Campbell was having a better year than McNabb. Why does it matter whether Brady has a cast or not? He’s just that damn good.

  4. Chris Says:

I never said Brady wasn’t good… but his new receivers make him a HELLUVA lot better. Again, how many times before THIS SEASON has he thrown for 45 touchdowns?

I’d like to see Manning with his current stable of receivers (not including Harrison because he’s hurt), plus a receiver that was so talented, all you have to do is throw it in his area code and his GD elbow will catch it (still my play of the year)…
