There’s a lot to talk about in relation to the Broncos/Chargers awesome game-fest that went on yesterday. Screwed up instant replay machines, missed fumbles and the toe of Tomlinson are just some of the talking points; but there’s one thing that cannot be disputed: Mike Shanahan has a feverish case of Bronco Balls. Considering the symptoms he showed yesterday, that has to be the logical conclusion.
This type of thinking can only lead to the following conclusions, if faced with a situation that needed a Mike Shanahan solution:
* Stuck in blizzard? Damn waiting it out — Mike Shanahan says plow through that wimpy-ass snow. Snow never stopped him so quit bitching. Hypothermia? Shanahan will kick hypothermia’s ass.
* Trailing by one point in a basketball game? Take the wide-open layup, right? Hell no. Layups are for high school kids. Either back that ball out and shoot a three or give or take it to the rack and dunk the shit out of it, whether you can touch the rim or not. No mid-range jump shots and foul-drawing free throw crap either.
* It’s the bottom of the ninth and the game’s tied. There’s a man on third with no outs and your best RBI hitter is at bat. Do you play it safe and hope the batter (or the two following him) knock winning run home? Hell. No. Is that what Mike Shanahan would do? No, Shanahan would have his base-runner steal home, while daring the pitcher to try and stop him.
It would work too, even if there was a missed call in the earlier innings that should have taken his team out of the game.
Was this some kind of mad genius at work or was Shanahan trying to get the win and get his team out of there before some kind of karmic backlash from the earlier missed calls occurred? Considering the other Bronco fortunes, it’s probably a smart thing Coach Shanahan didn’t wait on the outcome of the overtime coin toss.
