Amidst all of the parties and Will Leitch’s systematic takeover of all things Buzzsaw, there’s actually an NFL game going on this upcoming weekend. In case you hadn’t heard (or forgot while reading about all the skin available at the various parties), the New York Giants play the New England Patriots on Sunday in the NFL’s 42nd Super Bowl and as usual, people are betting on just about anything having to do with it.
Of course, one of the biggest points to be wagered is who is going to win the game and apparently, the betting public has been watching the last few weeks of the NFL. Because of an opening line of 14 points (now 12), the majority of the money is going on the Giants; about 80% of it, in fact.
Does this mean the betting public thinks the Giants are going to actually win on Sunday (perish the thought) or do they simply think the Pats won’t cover?
Let’s put it this way, if you offer me the Giants and 14 points, we have a deal.
Apparently, the betting public is really good at spotting trends as well because the Patriots haven’t covered the spread once during their playoff run and the betting reflects that. I guess that’s the price you pay for having the most explosive NFL offense ever… and for being perfect thus far.
There’s been “a non-stop flow of Giants money; 80% of the bets have been on the Giants,” says (Jay) Kornegay. Things could change quickly. (Chuck) Esposito predicts the spread could fall further, inducing more Patriots fans to bet their cash. Most Super Bowl bets are placed in the final 72 hours before kickoff. “Twelve is kind of a dead number,” Esposito says.

Much as I’m a Giants fan, I can’t bring myself to take them and 12 points, or 14. Then again, if the Jets can play the Pats close in Foxboro, there’s no reason the Giants can’t do so.
Am I worrying too much about Belicheat having two weeks to get ready for the game?
Ah forget it. Giants in a close one over the Pats after Strahan gnaws off the rest of Brady’s right foot on the first offensive play of the game for New England.
