While most of us were basking in the glow of Michael Phelps and his magnificent six — myself included — Rebecca Soni was winning an Olympic gold of her own in the 200-meter breaststroke, doing so in stellar fashion. In a surprising upset, Soni smashed Australian Leisel Jones, breaking the world record in the process.
Jones was the previous world record holder and the obvious favorite before the race started. So much for that distinction.
Unfortunately for Soni, her surprising victory went unnoticed as it was swept aside by the considerable wake provided by the Phelps phenomenon. Nevertheless, the result of the race has been recorded for prosperity and the record books now feature Soni’s name, lest we all forget that, no matter how awesome Phelps has been, he’s not the only story going on at the Water Cube’s “juiced*” swimming pool.
