May-Treanor, Walsh

Misty May-Treanor (I hate hyphens) and Kerri Walsh are America’s golden girls again — with no offense to Nastia or Shawn — repeating as beach volleyball Olympic Champions, something that’s never been done since the sport was admitted into the competition list. This time, the devastating duo beat hometown favorites Tian Jia and Wang Jie of China, 21-18, 21-18 to secure their second gold medal.

The match was played in what looked like monsoon conditions, making the viewing conditions for the guys back home all the better, something World of Issac does a great job of capturing with that excellent pictorial post.

For the May-Treanor and Walsh, it’s their 108th straight victory together, an astounding number in any sport. Their dominance is on par with John Wooden’s UCLA basketball program, the North Carolina women’s soccer program when they went on that three-year unbeaten streak, and just about any sports dynasty you can think of.

While it’s doubtful the two will be celebrated along the same lines, their dominance deserves the proper recognition and as long as they keep playing in spandex bikinis while it’s raining, said recognition will be given, if, by no one else, the sports blogosphere.
