Redeem Team

It was a ho-hum 97-76 victory for Team USA against Angola and while there are some things that could be criticized — 3-point defense continues to be largely absent — the outcome was never in doubt. Angola was complete outmatched and the times Team USA turned “it” on, they were putting up whatever points they wanted to and probably could have named their score.

Alas, Coach Krzyzewski elected to use his bench extensively, especially during the fourth quarter when the game was long out of reach. The Redeemers were led by Dwyane Wade’s 19 points, as the Miami guard’s rejuvenation tour continues to hit on all cylinders. Wade was followed by Dwight Howard’s 14.

The Angolans had little defense against Team USA’s inside game.

Next up for are the Greeks, the team that shocked the U.S. in the World Championship two years ago. This upcoming game represents the first “test” for the Redeemers and while there are concerns, I don’t see a team in the entire tournament that can stop Team USA in the open court or withstand their on-the-ball pressure for 40 minutes.

And heaven help the rest of the world if the US finds their 3-point shooting stroke anytime soon. To wit, Kobe Bryant was 0-8 from downtown. I doubt that continues for much longer.
