Nice Tackle, Jeff Reed

Folks, you are looking at the only touchdown from yesterday’s Cincinnati/Pittsburgh game. Adding insult to regular-season sweeps is kick Jeff Reed’s awesome attempt to bring Scott down. At about the 11-second mark, right when Scott breaks free from the coverage pack, Jeff Reed is waiting on him, acting as a safety on kick off returns. The resulting tackle effort is almost tear-inducing for all parties who watch it. For non Steelers fans, it’s actually something funny to see, so much you, you might laugh yourself to tears. On the other side of the coin, I have little doubt Reed’s attempted tackle — which consisted of, “Hey, you!!! Stop!!!!” — brings tears of sadness to the fans of the Terrible Towel.

Seriously, Jeff? That’s the best you can do? If so, in the future, you might just want to run off the field after you kick the ball. It would have the same result.

Titans Owner Flips Birds at Buffalo’s Bench

I’m not really sure what precipitated this, but Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams had two messages for the Buffalo Bills’ bench after his Titans had secured their third win of the season, and these messages involved birds, flipping, and middle fingers. 86-year-old Adams has since apologized for his finger bombs, saying he was caught up in the moment.

Not only does Adams flash his birds at the Bills bench, he does so in a celebratory method, almost like he’s dancing and his middle fingers are just an extension of his joy. Or disdain for the Bills, if you will.

Oddly enough, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was also in attendance for the game, although, it’s doubtful he was in the luxury box when Adams decided to express himself. Naturally, the NFL’s front office is “investigating” and will undoubtedly have a nice fine for Adams to pay when their investigation is complete. If Ochocinco and Cutler were fined $20 grand for their shenanigans, I would expect the punishment levied at Adams will be a little bit steeper.

Of course, I’m thinking about this logically because to me, owners have just as much responsibility at being respectful as players do. At least players are, you know, actually playing. Adams’ reaction is similar to what college fans do during rivalry games.

The Bengals Shut Terry Bradshaw Up

What was that, Terry? You were saying something along the lines of the Bengals beating Pittsburgh at home is akin to you winning a fight against Howie Long, right? Well, from the looks of it, you’d whip Howie up and down the field with great special teams and exceptional defense. And therein lies the beauty of guarantees in the world of sports. If you get it right, you look like a guru or a pundit.

If you don’t, you look much like Bradshaw does here: a buffoon.

For those of you who like to make season-opening wagers — you know, when the odds have been set according to last season’s results — and put money on the Bengals, your bet is looking smarter and smarter every week. Did I just call the Bengals a Super Bowl team? Not quite. In fact, as a fan, I don’t even want to hear those words, but with less than half the season remaining, you have to like their chances at making a strong finish.

How strong? That, my friends, will be determined by how well the Bengals defense continues to play.

H/t to Larry Brown Sports for the video find.

Chris Paul Isn’t Happy About The Scott Firing

I thought featuring a highlight video of some of CP3’s greatest hits would help hammer the message home about keeping your stars happy. Just watching him perform feat after feat of on-court wizardry shows how valuable to a potentially floundering franchise he really is. With that in mind, when the New Orleans’ front office decides to do a little bit of basketball housecleaning, perhaps asking the thoughts of their franchise player is a prudent move, especially when you are trying to convince potential fans to come watch your games.

Paul is unhappy with the way the Byron Scott firing went down, and as a franchise player, he thinks he should be at least consulted before the powers that be make drastic decisions that directly affect the on-court product, and he let his feelings be known:

“I felt like, maybe somebody would have at least consulted with me and asked how I felt before it happened,” Paul told the New Orleans Times-Picayune after Scott’s firing was formally announced. “It’s not to get my approval, but we feel we should know about the decision before it takes place.”

Does this mean Paul wanted the Hornets to keep Scott around? Not necessarily. What Paul is saying — rightfully so, I might add — is that when you are going to shuffle the team’s deck in such a drastic manner, perhaps their best, most marketable player should be consulted, or at least informed before the team makes the news public.

Considering job one for general manager, and now interim head coach, Jeff Bower is convincing Paul to stay in New Orleans when his contract is up, he might want to think about keeping his star happy, or at least make him feel like he’s a part of the franchise outside of his stellar ability and on-the-court play.

Dwyane Wade Did This

That’s just rude. Poor Anderson Varejao. Dwyane, you shouldn’t treat guests in your own house that way. Varejao got the last laugh, though — well, at least LeBron and Mo Williams did as Cleveland dispatched the Miami Heat in the Heat’s house. James finished with 34 points and seven assists, while Williams finished with 25 and three.

As for Wade’s thunder dunk, does the authority of such an amazing play get diminished when your team loses?

Ochocinco Fined for Bribe Attempt

Commissioner Goodell decided Chad Ochocinco’s playful bribe attempt during last Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens was too much for Neat Fun League to endure, and so, they walloped Ochocinco’s bank account to the tune of $20,000. So yeah, offer a ref a dollar to “influence” a call? You might want to add $19,999 to that, just to make sure you cover any unseen expenses.

More about Chad Ochocinco’s fine here.
