Intentional Link Dump: News For A Slow Day

It’s kinda slow going as we wait on things like the bowl games to begin, NFL Sunday (did anyone watch last night’s Washington/Chicago game?), weekend college basketball and anything else deemed sports-blog worthy. Here’s a little link love for of some stories that caught my eye as I made my way through the Google Reader. Enjoy:

- It’s Heisman Trophy weekend and Loser with Socks gives us some reasons why Tebow shouldn’t win. They also ask just how effective McFadden would be in Urban Meyer’s system, which is something interesting to ponder as well.

Dwayne Wayne- Well, it’s Christmas time boys and girls and you know what that means: office Christmas parties. The Sports Hernia has a nifty little list of the sports conversations you can expect from your non-sports savvy co-workers.

Why yes, that Dwayne Wayne is a GREAT basketball player… just ask Denise Huxtable.

- Kansas forward Brandon Rush got arrested. Don’t forget to take care of those traffic violations, kids.

- That Dwight Howard is something else.

- SI’s 16-team college playoff is now in it’s Elite 8 stage. Who ya got?

- Barry Bonds, much to everyone’s surprise, pleaded “Not Guilty” to his federal charges. I wonder if he plead guilty to being an ass to his fans?

- An Alex Legion update. Apparently, he wants to come back to the Cats, but Gillispie hasn’t decided if he’ll allow it or not.

Athena Barber- Epic Carnival asks us who has the hottest girlfriend/wife in sports? This is an ongoing competition so make sure you stay tuned. This week’s contestants are Eliza Dushku and reigning champ, Athena Barber.

Again, who ya got?

- And finally, our news of the obvious: Stephen A. Smith has been voted as the worst sports announcer. Color me surprised. The next thing you’ll tell me is water is wet and the sky is blue.

Well kiddies, that should give you plenty of reading fodder while you are waiting for the weekend to arrive. Enjoy the Heisman presentation and whatever other athletics you are engaged in.

I don’t understand the people who vote for the heisman and never will. It’s about the same for the BCS. I know everyone is riding Tebow and his jock. I’m not! Two guys got robbed last year in my opinion because they didn’t play for a national title. Troy Smith yes had a good year. It wasn’t better than Colt of the warriors or run-DMC of the hogs. DMC came in second why manly cause he was a soph. Colt didn’t even get invited because of weak competition. Colt was responsible for 63% of his team scoring last year and I don’t believe he even got an invite to NYC. Tebow is responsible for 59% of his this year. Yes he can run and tuned up his throwing ability. Good for him (like I care). Colt the system quarterback they call him. Tebow isn’t? Do I deny what Tebow did this year, nope. I know he won’t be playing on New Year Day or after. DMC helped (modest) beat LSU in Baton Rogue. Tebow didn’t do that. I know wasn’t his fault, right. I will say it first Colt plays for USC (not cocks) he wins hands down.

  2. Chris Says:

The same can be said for those running backs that broke the 2000 yard barrier this year. If they were playing at a big school, they would be getting all the pub.

  3. David Utter Says:

I heard them talking about Washington and Chicago playing, I thought it was Caps and Blackhawks. Talk about a no-one cares matchup.

As far as the Heisman goes, Tebow had a hand in 51 TDs, he had more rushing TDs than DMC, Colt didn’t play anybody this year (which isn’t to say he wouldn’t be great in the Pac-10). I can see McFadden winning it, but I think Tebow earned it. Colt’s hosed because of where he plays.

Dump the bowl system for a playoff and do the Heisman voting in January, then you’ll figure out who was the most outstanding college player.

  4. Xavier Says:

Colt had 58 last year and didn’t get an invite. OSU didn’t play anyone either this year and they got rewarded with a national title shot. Stop hating on where he plays and focus on what he did. How could you bring up two guys that aren’t even up for the trophy? Kevin Smith and Matt Forte he is speaking of. Some of Tebow big numbers come from running up the score. It’s a slow news day from what I read. I guess that’s why Central Florida and Tulane was brought up. Tebow isn’t my pick. It’s not that Kal-El doesn’t deserve it but two more facts for those who care. No soph has ever won it. Only two quarterbacks have ever won it with three losses. Troy Smith won his in a runaway. The voters are telling you DMC came for nothing last year. Chase would be better off staying at home. Colt and DMC are invited for what they did last year cause the numbers aren’t as good this year.

  5. Chris Says:

Well, I’m kinda agreeing with your point about Brennan. The last thing you said was if Colt played for USC, he’d win hands down. The same is true with Smith and Forte and Marshall Faulk and Steve McNair… the list goes on.

And Tebow owes A LOT of his rushing TDs to the fact the Gators DO NOT have a running back. We’ll see what happens next year when the USC transfer becomes eligible.

I’ve often wondered how many of Tebow/Superman’s rushing TDs were of the goal line variety… Of course, I could look it up but that’s just too easy.

  6. Xavier Says:

I think what burns me the most is, how could any DB fall for the play action run? Which may be the gayest thing I have seen on a football field other than Tebow and Joey Porter getting kissed.

  7. Chris Says:

Nothing is as bad as the unnecessary jump passes. Hey look, my home-schooled QB is an athlete…

    *rollseyes*

  8. David Utter Says:

The whole point of play action is to freeze the defense. They have to worry about Tebow running as well as passing, so DBs fall for it. Blame the coaches if you must.

Ten of Tebow’s rushing TDs were five yards or more. Not all of them were one yard dives. I can’t see how the Heisman voters could have looked at the first QB in NCAA to pass and run for 20+ each, and doing it in the SEC, and go “naaahhh, screw him.”

58 TDs at Hawaii wasn’t going to win over the bazillions of free hours of publicity ESPN gave to OSU last year. Unfair? Yeah, but life’s like that.

Brennan missed two or three games this year, DMC had a couple of games where he didn’t do anything. Like Chris said, there were backs with better years than DMC this season. Tebow’s worst game was 2 TDs against Auburn.

As far as teams getting screwed this year, Oklahoma has to be at the front of the line (yes Chris, ahead of the Dawgs). What was OSU doing while the Sooners were crushing Mizzou? Probably sharing camera phone pictures with Herbstreit.

  9. Xavier Says:

Coaches the only ones that watch film? Don’t think so.

Plus you answered your own question. Free hours of publicity for Troy Smith. While Colt comes short of the record (54) with 53 and came in 6th in the voting.

DMC couldn’t win it last year(soph so the voters say) and his team went 10-4 at ARKANSAS in the SEC.

Oh well I guess he will be the first three time winner. ESPN got his back.
