Best. Save. Ever?

His name is Rene Higuita and his showmanship on the soccer pitch extends way past his hair, all the way down to his goalkeeping abilities. What you are about to witness is one of the oddest saves from a goalie you’ll ever see.
On the YouTube comments, some indicated this was the best save they’ve ever seen. While I can understand the level of appreciation for the acrobat skill displayed by Higuita, what he did there was not really necessary. Wouldn’t simply catching and releasing it to one of his attacking players be better than lobbing the ball back into play like that?
You never know, an opposing player with Pele’ aspirations could try to connect with a bicycle kick and that’d end your trip real quick, wouldn’t it? Nevertheless, I give credit where it’s due — that play certainly looked awesome. I’m not sure if that’s the safest way to defend your goal, but it did look awesome.

Ok that could easily have gone completely wrong, but wow it was cool. Isn’t the Beautiful Game supposed to have moments like these?

Very cool and tons of style points — BUUUUUUUUT — the goal of the goalie is NOT to keep the ball in play when the opposing team is attacking. I know I’m being a killjoy, but still. Catch the damn thing next time.
