Clint Dempsey’s Go-Ahead Goal

Well, that was… improbable. Nevertheless, after what might have been two of their worst international showings since the 1998 World Cup, the United State miraculously advanced to the knock-out round of the Confederations Cup after a stirring 3-0 victory over Egypt. As improved as the United States looked against Egypt, they would not have advanced without a little help from their soccer-playing friends from Brazil.

Not only did the US need both wins, they also needed each of the six goals scored by themselves and the Brazilians to advance past the Italians, due to the goal differential factor. If head-to-head matches were considered, the Azzurri would be the ones getting ready to play Spain.

For some reason, I feel a “take that, Giuseppe Rossi” coming on, but that would be poor sportsmanship. Nevertheless, when the Italy/US game ended, I doubt there were very many soccer-watching folk who thought the Italians would be the team missing the second round of play. While their loss to the Brazilians will be remembered for Brazil’s dominate play, keep in mind Italy also lost to Egypt, 1-0. That loss should resonate just as loudly as being outclassed by Brazil.

As for Team USA, their reward for advancement is the number one team in FIFA. This time, however, they won’t be able to rely on Brazil if they have any inkling of advancement — something like more opportunities at goal. Three games in, the US has taken 35 shots. Teams like Brazil and Spain are at 60 and 58, respectively. Speaking of Spain’s impressive offensive attack, the US had better be ready to defend for all they are worth. If not, someone like Fernando Torres will make them pay dearly.

Spain and the US play on Wednesday. The winner moves on to face the winner of Brazil/South Africa. Is the world ready for a Spain/Brazil final? Because that sounds like a celebration of the highest order.
