D.J. Augustin

Our second stanza features Georgetown/UMBC, San Diego/UConn, Texas/Austin Peay (featuring D.J. Augustin, our feature image player), and South Alabama/Butler.

Who ya got?

2:17 - Still recovering from Ty Rogers… Texas is jumping out early on Austin Peay.

2:27 - It seems Texas got the “2-seeds struggle” memo and decided against it. But Georgetown did not. Butler/South Alabama looks like it could be another Western/Drake game.

2:47 - These middle games are kind of “meh.” Georgetown is slowly but surely pulling away, but I don’t see another Final Four out of them. Butler is starting to take control of South Alabama and Texas is just so much better than Austin Peay.

There’s still hope for South Alabama, but after Ty Rogers, I think the rest of the excitement will be saved until tonight… However, San Diego’s quickness will give UConn fits (just underway).

2:52 - And as soon as I say South Bama has a chance, Butler takes a 17-point lead in to the halftime break. I guess Western Kentucky WAS the real Sun Belt champ…

2:56 - Georgetown needs a last-second 3 (on a great shot by Chris Wright) to take a double-digit lead into halftime… Meanwhile, the other 2-seed that’s playing, Texas, is beating Austin Peay pretty soundly, but, it’s not as big as it looked like it could’ve been when the game started.

D.J. Augustin has a triple-triple going on: 3 points, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds. Spooooooky.

As an aside, every player I featured yesterday (the images) had pretty good games. Today, that doesn’t appear to be the case. Lofton only had 5 points against American and we’ve already discussed D.J.’s triple-triple.

3:05 - UConn’s A.J. Price just hurt his knee. The way they were carrying him off the court, it looked pretty serious… it also looked like his left knee. Not good.

3:15 - That DIRECTV girl is hard to find… Dammit, why can’t more companies take a cue from GoDaddy and put their commercials on their sites? She’s smokin’…

3:20 - Oh yeah, I’ve had about 2-3 more nag screens. Bastards.

3:25 - I don’t need to hear Tim Brando pitching Coke Zero. There are enough commercials already… OK, I said San Diego’s quickness would be trouble for UConn and when you add Price’s sprained knee, it’s easy to see UConn has indeed got themselves an uphill fight.

Believe me, I know all about San Diego’s quickness. I’m a UK fan.

3:31 - San Diego is probably going to beat UConn… I’m not quite committed to this, but I’m really close. Too bad that’ll wreck the hell out of my bracket. Judging by all of these 20-point plus leads right now, that’ll be the only exciting game of the second stanza.

Not much to do except sit back and enjoy watching Augustin play. In my search for DIRECTV girl, I did discover Tanya Memme (a DIRECTV host of some kind) is pretty hot as well.

3:44 - Butler is beating South Alabama like they said something bad about their mothers. Maybe South Alabama is mad Western Kentucky won…

3:56 - UConn looks like they are done. However, word is Price is moving around on the bench for the Huskies, but they are down 9… and can’t score.

4:10 - Other games = blow outs. UConn/San Diego = like watching a person stuck in quicksand trying to race a juiced-up Ben Johnson. The Huskies (lack of) effort is disappointing and San Diego must be acknowledged for taking advantage of it.

4:20 - Apparently, UConn heard me coaching. They actually tied it but subsequently gave up a 3. I don’t think UConn is going to be able to contain USD’s perimeter players… It’s not like they have already as it is.

Master of the obvious, this one is…

4:28 - While UConn is back in it, they are showing a noticeable lack of emotion. Thabeet gets a 3-point play to cut it to 3 and everyone acts like it’s just another day at the office. Someone needs to fire these guys up before it’s too late.

However, if they aren’t fired up by now, maybe it already is.

4:34 - OK Huskies, you’ve got (had) the lead and are playing with more intensity… Kudos. But don’t for one second think that’s going to wilt the Toreros.

4:36 - Good lord. Why even bother shooting in the paint when Thabeet is there?

4:37 - UNLESS YOUR NAME IS ROB JONES AND YOU PLAY FOR SAN DIEGO. Damn, that reverse lay-up was nasty.

San Diego answers UConn’s lead with a 6-0 run to get back up by 4. Under a minute left.

4:45 - Devin Ginty had a chance to ice it for USD but missed the second free throw. Nice going. Free throws, ya’ll.

4:50 - OVERTIME. Why foul the player driving to the bucket? Especially when you aren’t a shot-blocker?

5:00 - Whatever happens here, you have to admire San Diego’s resilience. They could’ve folded back when UConn took their first second half lead.

5:02 - Are you kidding me? Rob Jones AGAIN… but he missed the free throw. UConn will have free throws to take the lead.

5:04 - Nice job by UConn’s Dyson but San Diego isn’t done yet. Hold on to those brackets, folks… Sorry, Jim, I’m play-by-playing. But sometimes, you just gotta.

5:06 - His name is De’ Jon Jackson. DE’ JON JACKSON. HE PLAYS FOR SAN DIEGO!!!

5:09 - SAN DIEGO ADVANCES. GOODBYE BRACKET!!! See you in Thread 3.

Ballhype: hype it up! Stumble it!

Whoa some really boring games. Hurry and get back from halftime UConn and San Diego.

  2. David Utter Says:

Duke-Belmont and WKU-Drake have been the only March-worthy games so far.

  3. Chris Says:

Ah hell, that’s not true. UK/Marquette was good and this one is shaping up (UConn/USD) to be good… at least from the aspect of UConn perhaps losing.

  4. Chris Says:

    I’m forgetting Davidson/Zaga too.

  5. Xavier Says:

I think what David was saying is games that come to the final shot. So he would be right with the games he wrote.

  6. Chris Says:

Is a buzzer-beater a requirement for a good game? Or last second drama? Just curious… I mean, don’t tell Stephen Curry that.

    ;)

  7. Xavier Says:

Buzzer beaters make better end of game drama rather than throw up a three and hit then foul and pray the other team misses.

San Diego over Kentucky looks better in the favor of UK. Then again they did lose at Rupp. I won’t take anything away from San Diego.

  8. Chris Says:

Hell, USD beat Gonzaga before it became common to do so… :P And yes, buzzer-beaters take a game from good to great. But these games have been good. Many of them, anyway.

  9. Chris Says:

    USD, USD, USD, USD, USD!!

    GO TOREROS!!!!!!!!!!

  10. David Utter Says:

Wow, go San Diego. And yes, my criteria for a great hoops matchup is a game that gets decided in the last second. As far as UK-Marquette, where was that Joe Crawford all season?
